Frequently Asked Questions...
1. What kinds of coaching do you do?
I am trained to assist anyone who wishes to improve his or her life, both professionally and personally. I have a particular interest in working with those who are seeking career fulfillment, either in changing or determining the correct career path, improving their current work experience or transitioning to a new situation.
As a person who enjoys accomplishment, I particularly enjoy working with clients who want to learn effective management techniques to successfully handle their many competing priorities. As the mother of 4, including triplets, I fully understand the many demands of family and work. I can teach you an effective five phase process that will enable you to achieve more than you ever dreamed possible, making room in your life for those most important goals and aspirations.
My clients range in age from teenagers seeking career information to those in the retirement phases of their careers and everyone in between! I also work with companies who want to improve the performance of their employees.
2. I'm unhappy with my current position and have decided to look for a new job. What can a coach do for me that I can't do for myself or that my friends can't do for me?
Just as you seek professional help for other areas in your life, such as hiring an accountant, attorney or physician, it is important to work with a credentialed, skilled coach when you decide to change your job or career. I will help you determine the source of your dissatisfaction, so that you don't repeat the same mistakes that led to your current unhappiness. Together, we will work towards successful transition for you. I'll help you consider your natural strengths, personality, interests and goals as you define the ideal career path and then help you navigate there.
3. If I work with you, will you help me find a job?
I am not a placement service nor do I guarantee you a job. However, if you are interested in redefining your career aspirations, I will help you establish your best options based on your personality, interests, passions and preferences. Once you are satisfied with your goal, I will show you an effective job hunting process and strategy to locate the job you desire. I will also teach you how to interview well, write an effective resume and become the candidate of choice. If I have contacts that may be helpful to you, I am glad to share them.
4. How do you know what companies want when they are hiring?
I have spent more than 25 years with major Fortune 50 companies in leading strategic Human Resources roles, so I have been the face of the company seeking talent. Because of this, I have unparalleled experience in helping you navigate the job seeking world.
5. One of my friends offered to help me with my job search. I don't think I need a coach for this. Do I?
While your friend is probably well-intentioned, it is important to select someone who is experienced in helping people determine and find their career path. Unlike a friend who may not want to tell you the truth, I will tell you what no one else. will. A coach is someone solidly in your corner committed to your success. I can help ensure that you remain focused and make progress to the ultimate goal. I've helped hundreds of people just like you. The desire for meaningful work is something that we all share. I can help you maximize your efforts and maximum results. Don't underestimate how stressful it is to change jobs!
6. Do you specialize in certain careers or do you coach people no matter what kind of work they do?
I have worked with people in very diverse settings and careers; the commonality is the desire to live a life of purpose and reward. Each of my clients is unique with a special story.
7. What information do I provide to you to help me with my job search? I just lost my job and don't even know where to begin.
This can be a very difficult position for you, especially if you didn't anticipate losing your job. It's important to take stock of your immediate needs, such as unemployment and medical insurance. I help you to assess your current state and determine if you want to find a similar position or have decided to strike out on a different path. If you are uncertain of your direction, I may ask you to take some assessments. In any case, depending on your goals, I work with you to chart a course for success. A coach is a real plus at this time of your life, especially if you are reluctant to burden your spouse or family with your concerns. A coach honors your confidentiality and you can feel free to tell me anything without fear of it being shared with anyone else.
8. I think I want to work for myself. Can you help me?
Yes, I enjoy working with anyone who is interested in living a life of purpose. Whatever you think you want to pursue, I will be able to help you assess your strengths, potential challenges and strategies to succeed.
9. What exactly happens at a coaching meeting? Is it like therapy?
No, coaching is not therapy. If your needs are therapeutic in nature, I will refer you to an appropriate therapist.
In a coaching relationship, we meet, usually twice a month, for 50-60 minutes per session. This frequency enables us to keep the momentum going. Your role is to establish the goals and agenda. I provide you with thought provoking questions, exercises and assignments designed to move you towards the goals. There are various options available to you depending on what you hope to achieve. At the conclusion of each meeting you have a roadmap of activities to work on until we meet the next time. Depending on your location, we may meet in person, via Skype or on the phone. If you are in Indianapolis, I can come to your office or meet at a neutral location if you prefer.
10. Do you offer a free session to get to know you?
It is very important that we relate well to each other so I invite you to meet me for a half hour session to determine if you believe I can help you. At the same time, I will assess your ability to be coached, your willingness to do the hard work necessary for success and the reality of your goals and aspirations. If we believe we can work well together, we will take the necessary steps to establish a coaching partnership. I only accept clients who are willing to do the difficult work necessary for success and with whom we can establish a mutually trusting relationship. There is no point wasting your money or time in meetings which do not lead to achievement.
11. I have heard about someone who is a coach but who isn't credentialed. Does that matter?
There may be some very able coaches who are not credentialed. Currently, anyone can call themselves a "coach". Personally, I believe it is important to invest your resources with someone who has been willing to subject themselves to a costly investment of rigorous training, testing, evaluation and ongoing education and who has the requisite background to support you. A credentialed coach has worked hard to prove to an independent world-wide governing agency that he/she is qualified to coach. Not everyone can achieve this level of accomplishment. I believe it is important to be an educated consumer. If I were spending my money for a coach, I would want to work with someone who is credentialed by the International Coach Federation (www.coachfederation.org), the world wide governing body of coaches. To be credentialed by this organization, a coach must meet rigorous educational standards, pass exams, complete on-going education and adhere to ethical standards. They must demonstrate their coaching ability. This protects the consumer and ensures the integrity of the coaching process.
I am glad to provide my credentials to any potential client to satisfy this valid concern. I have coached more than 750 hours to earn the designation of Professional Certified Coach (PCC). In addition, I am a Master Practitioner of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, a valid assessment used in helping clients discern their natural strengths.
12. What do you charge?
My fees depend on what you require. Once I understand your goals, I can provide you with cost options. You may work with me "ala carte" as needed or through a coaching package, which results in a discounted fee to you. For corporate clients, we provide a proposal based on the scope of the project.
